WAIS gymnasts to be offered acknowledgement payments.

May 2024

Athletes harmed in gymnastics in Western Australia will be offered acknowledgement payments, following a redress scheme secured by Gym Alliance Aus.

ARA congratulates Julia Murcia and her colleagues at Gym Alliance Aus, whose persistence made this happen. We also thank the Western Australian Government, and Sports Minister David Templeman in particular, for facilitating the shift.

The scheme is limited to $15,000 per applicant and does not compensate for the harm suffered. But the acknowledgement itself is critical, and it did not exist before.

The scheme is a timely reminder that children in sport have a right to safety, held sacred under Article 3 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
